The design philosophy of “Chashitsu” is in its simplicity and minimalism, therefore, any room/space can be made/converted into “Chashitsu”. Having said that, since “Chashitsu” is a very philosophical space designed with the concept of “Zen”, fitting “Chashitsu” in any existing structure requires careful design including “Feng Shui”.

Unlike Shinkabe (Traditional) Style “Washitsu”, Okabe (Modern) Style “Washitsu” dese not have all the traditional fixtures such as “Tokonoma”. There are far more design variation for Okabe style than Shinkabe Style, many of which employ more modern and artistic design elements in its materials and fixtures as well. Particularly “Tatami” mats, the must fixture for most “Washitsu”, are available in vast variety and combination of color, material, style and design to match the style of the room and space.

Okabe style “Washitsu” is easy to be retrofitted in most 2x4/2x6 structure without much structural modification and the cost is also significantly less than Shinkabe Style.

”Tatami” Mats are traditionally used in variety of “Budo”(武道）such as, Judo, Karate and Iai-do.

”Dojo” (道場) is a place/space where many Japanese “Budo”(武道) is practiced and apprentices are trained.  Like any place with Tatami, which makes the space spiritually tuned to Harmony (和), “Dojo” is considered to be the sacred place for anyone practice any “Budo”. 

The moment you place Tatami anywhere, it automatically creates a space of Harmony (和). Tatami has that effect particularly for Japanese and anyone who has Wa (和) cultural DNA engraved in their heart and spirit.
